Journey Through Time: The Legacy of Claremont Primary School
Claremont Primary School has a rich history dating back to its founding by Sir Ebenezer John Buchanan on October 5, 1892. The first principal, Mr. George French, began in 1894 with just 17 pupils and a single room. He played a significant role in establishing the Scout movement in South Africa.
The school grew steadily, and by 1913, classes were held in the old Claremont Town Hall. Over the decades, the school saw numerous developments under various principals, such as the addition of new classrooms, a woodwork center, and a formal Cadet Corps during the Great War.
From 1920 to 1939, principals like Mr. S.J. Fort and Mr. Frank Ferguson further expanded the school’s facilities and traditions. Significant milestones included the opening of the Frank Ferguson Hall in 1959 and the development of the Westwood Sports Centre in 1978.
The school was officially renamed Claremont Primary School in 1981, and extensive renovations were completed in 1985. The leadership of Mr. David Martin from 1989 and Mr. Errol Richards from 1997 brought further modernization, including the establishment of a computer center and the transition to a mixed ‘Model C’ school.
Under Mr. E. Reddy’s leadership since 2008, Claremont Primary School continues to uphold its legacy of excellence and innovation.
